[Introduction]
Music is a universal language that speaks to all of humanity, serving as a vivid and authentic form of expression across different cultures. With its vast territory and large population, China boasts a wide variety of music genres, including singing, dancing, and instrument playing.
In this summer program, we have invited five professors and experts from different countries and universities. They will deliver eight lectures from various perspectives, including ethnomusicology, cross-cultural communication, conducting art, history and sociology, aesthetics, and artificial intelligence research. The lecture topics will cover popular music, ethnic music, conducting art, artistic aesthetics, instrument archaeology, music acoustics, music signal processing, and artificial intelligence. The aim is to showcase the breadth and depth of music art from different research fields and perspectives, while fostering understanding and communication among diverse cultures.
【Teaching Faculty】
Liang Rui
Liang Rui is an associate professor at the Music Education Center of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences of Xi'an Jiaotong University. she taught at the Confucius Institute at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for 3 years. During this period, she organized many cultural lectures, art exchange activities and concert performances. She offers Chinese music courses to international students and guides them to participate in various competitions, performances, and exchanges related to traditional Chinese music.
Matthew J. George
Matthew J. George is the John Ireland Distinguished Professor of Music and conductor of bands and orchestras at the University of St. Thomas (St. Paul, Minnesota). As an active conductor, George keeps busy with his conducting work all year round. He has performed in more than 20 countries in Europe, America, Asia, and Africa. As a guest conductor, he often collaborates with professional orchestras and ensembles around the world and has served as artistic director of several international music festivals. Professor George is often invited to give lectures at music conferences around the world on topics such as conducting pedagogy and wind music literature performance.
Ge Dongmei
Ge Dongmei is an associate professor at the School of Foreign Studies, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Xi'an, China. Her main research field falls in applied linguistics and genre analysis. Her interests also include translation and cultural studies. She has translated articles on classical music appreciation.
Wang Yixin
WANG Yixin, Dr., Assistant Professor at the Frontier Institute of Science and Technology, Xi'an Jiaotong University. She received a Bachelor's degree in Automation from Xi'an Jiaotong University in 2017, an engineering degree (Master’s level) from CentraleSupélec in France in 2020, and a Ph.D. in Control Science and Engineering from Xi'an Jiaotong University in 2024. From 2022 to 2023, she visited the School of Computing, National University of Singapore. Her research interests include music artificial intelligence, digital signal processing for audio and music, and the popularization and education at the intersection of art and science.
Fang Xueyang
Dr. Fang Xueyang , lecturer, based at Tianjin Normal University. Graduated from the University of Huddersfield in UK and once participated in the research project of “European Music Archaeology” to make audio and video productions on ancient musical instrument performances. Dr. Fang has presented in many international conferences and forums and has visited museums in and outside China to investigate ancient musical instruments. She has published several music articles in domestic and international publications, as well as monograph in English relate to chime stones.
