Basic Information of the Department of Philosophy
The Department of Philosophy of Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU) originated from the education of scripture in the preparatory course of Chinese language in Nanyang Public School in 1908. 1984, XJTU was granted the master's degree in Marxist philosophy and philosophy of science and technology; 1994, XJTU established the Department of Philosophy; 2003, XJTU was granted the first doctoral degree in Marxist philosophy in Northwest China; 2008, XJTU started to enroll in the undergraduate program of philosophy. In 2010, Xi'an Jiaotong University was granted a first-level doctoral degree in philosophy; in 2012, a postdoctoral station in philosophy was established at Xi'an Jiaotong University; in 2019, the Institute of Philosophy and Culture was established at the Western China Science and Technology Innovation Port; in 2020, the philosophy program of Xi'an Jiaotong University was selected as one of the first undergraduate programs of the Ministry of Education. Introduction to the Discipline of Philosophy
The Department of Philosophy at Xi'an Jiaotong University focuses on five areas: Marxist philosophy, foreign philosophy, Chinese philosophy, philosophy of science and technology, and aesthetics. Marxist philosophy focuses on classical texts and fundamental theories; foreign philosophy focuses on Greek philosophy, German philosophy, comparison of Chinese and Western philosophy and cognitive philosophy; Chinese philosophy focuses on classical Confucianism, Taoism and Song and Ming philosophy; philosophy of science and technology focuses on philosophy of information and philosophy of artificial intelligence; aesthetics focuses on philosophical aesthetics, literary aesthetics and art aesthetics.
The discipline has accumulated fruitful scientific research results in the basic theory of philosophy, philosophy of information, philosophy of the body, and philosophy of value, formed a mature academic community, and coalesced into an advantageous characteristic research field. On the basis of this, the discipline is actively cultivating new research fields with advantages and characteristics, such as philosophy of artificial intelligence, focusing not only on applications but also on strengthening the research of philosophy of artificial intelligence in terms of basic theory.
The philosophy department of Xi'an Jiaotong University is actively exploring the change of philosophy development concept from "philosophy of" to "philosophy +", that is, from "philosophizing specific science" to "examining science and technology from a philosophical perspective". In other words, from "philosophizing specific science" to "examining major realistic problems in science and technology, state and society, and human social development from a philosophical perspective", thus realizing the inherent cross-fertilization of philosophy and specific science.
Scientific Research Platform
In accordance with the "Program for the Inner Construction of the Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences", the Philosophy Department has set up a think tank cluster "Institute of Philosophy and Culture" in the Innovation Port. The cluster includes the Research Base of Philosophy of Information and Basic Theory of Intelligent Society, which includes five research centers: (1) International Research Center of Philosophy of Information; (2) Research Center of Argumentation and Innovation; (3) Research Center of Guanxi; (4) Research Center of Basic Theory of Philosophy; (5) Research Center of Philosophy of Artificial Intelligence. The base has created a platform for general education in philosophy, led by the "Peng Kang Philosophy Forum", which consists of three main parts: the "Xue Er Forum", which serves teachers and students inside and outside the university and aims to promote philosophy and humanities education. It has explored a unique path of "Western Jiaotong University" in spreading Chinese culture, promoting Chinese wisdom and theory, and serving the development of information and intelligent society.
